The Green-Winged Macaw (Ara chloropterus), also known as the Red-and-Green Macaw, is one of the largest and most striking macaws native to South America.
Physical Characteristics
- Size: About 90–95 cm (35–37 inches) in length.
- Weight: Between 1,050–1,708 g (2.3–3.8 lbs).
- Coloration: Predominantly red, with green upper wing coverts and blue flight feathers and tail.
- Beak: Large and powerful, with a horn-colored upper mandible and a black lower mandible.
- Eyes: Surrounded by a patch of white skin with red feather lines.
Behavior & Habitat
- Highly social, often seen in pairs or small flocks.
- Found in rainforests, woodlands, and savannas across Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Paraguay.
- Not migratory, but they adapt well to different environments.
- Intelligent and vocal, known for their strong bonds with mates.
Conservation Status
The Green-Winged Macaw is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, but habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade pose threats to wild populations.
